The Craft Studio Tee by Matchy Matchy Sewing Club is the perfect project for beginner sewists. If you are wanting to learn how to sew, or are looking for a beginner sewing pattern, the Craft Studio Tee is the pattern for you.
I teach sewing classes in Bozeman, Montana, and my students love sewing the Craft Studio Tee. It is approachable for even the most novice of sewists — the pattern only has one complex step — the neckline. It checks every box for a first sewing project — the Craft Studio Tee will teach you how to sew a shirt in an approachable way. Every step has a detailed illustration which walks you through even the most minute instructions. The pattern features only one notch — matching the center of the sleeve to the shoulder seam.

The perfect first sewing project — the only skill you need to sew the Craft Studio Tee is knowing how to thread your sewing machine.
Customizable — I made my Craft Studio Tee with contrasting panels to create a unique garment.
Skills needed to sew the Craft Studio Tee:
How to thread a sewing machine.
How to select stitches and change settings on your sewing machine.
optional but ideal: How to finish a raw edge.
optional but ideal: How to cut fabric with a sewing pattern.
If you are familiar with how a sewing machine works, you can sew the Craft Studio Tee! Between cutting and sewing, this project should take you about 6 hours.
Pros of the Craft Studio Tee:
It was created for beginners as a first sewing project.
The construction is simple — the body of the shirt comes together with just 6 seams.
It has very few complex details. There is only one notch found in the pattern, avoiding potential confusion for a first time sewist.
Cons of the Craft Studio Tee:
It has limited measurements in the sizing chart. I would have loved to see a sleeve length measurement, or clarification that the pattern was designed with a 3/4” sleeve in mind.
The shirt is very oversized. I had to size down 2 sizes from the intended size chart, and the shirt is still loose on me.
Craft Studio Tee Pattern Notes:
I lengthened the sleeve by 4” so that the shirt is a long sleeve rather than a 3/4 sleeve. In hindsight, I could have lengthened it an additional 0.5” — 4.5” in total.
When assembling the color blocking, I cut one panel with the wrong side out. Next time, I will be mindful about which direction the pattern is facing when I am cutting my fabric.
